The Christian church is made up of those who have been baptized and thus have received Christ as the Son of God and Savior of the world. Lutherans believe that they are a part of a community of faith that began with the gift of the Holy Spirit, God's presence with his people, on the day of Pentecost. The church, regardless of the external form it takes, is the fellowship of those who have been restored to God by Christ. Indeed, to be called into fellowship with Christ is also to be called into community with other believers. The church is essential to Christian life and growth. Its members are all sinners in need of God's grace. It has no claim on human perfection. The church exists solely for the hearing and doing of God's Word. It can justify its existence only when it proclaims the living Word of Christ, administers the Sacraments and gives itself to the world in deeds of service and love. Most Lutherans recognize a wider fellowship of churches and are eager to work alongside them in ecumenical ministries and projects.
Lutherans accept two Sacraments as God-given means for penetrating the lives of people with his grace. Although they are not the only means of God's self-revelation, Baptism and Holy Communion are visible acts of God's love.
In Baptism, and it can be seen more clearly in infant Baptism, God freely offers his grace and lovingly establishes a new community. In Holy Communion -- often called the Lord's Supper or the Eucharist -- those who come to the table receive in bread and wine the body and blood of their Lord. This gift is itself the real presence of God's forgiveness and mercy, nourishing believers in union with their Lord and with each other.
Our Mission: Live God's love in the world.
Our Vision: A vibrant urban church centered in enthusiastic and inspirational worship, grace-filled
service, and rich opportunities for spiritual growth.
Our Core Values: We do God's work by . . .
Growing in faith through worship, study, prayer and fellowship
Risking innovation and Spirit-led change
Anchoring ourselves in Christ's steadfast love, hope and joy
Caring for all with compassion, respect and integrity
Excelling in every endeavor

Continue the Journey (Building Fund Committee)
The crews are here and work has begun! During the first few weeks the focus was on “light” demolition and abatement. The light demolition included the removal of non-load bearing walls and the removal of heating ducts, flooring, electrical fixtures, plumbing fixtures, and generally stripping the interior bare. There was much anticipation about the condition of the wood paneling and whether any of it would be salvageable. Unfortunately, the paneling was applied with both nails and glue and was not in salvageable condition. The contractor has received the first set of comments from the city regarding the building plans, and there does not appear to be any item of major concern. In the past few weeks the “heavy” demolition (the removal of the chimneys) and the beginning of rough plumbing have taken place. On the exterior a waterproof barrier is being installed below grade on the west side of the fellowship hall. Once that is in place, slurry will be placed against the building and new drains to pull water away from the building will be installed. Since for 95 years there has been nothing but dirt against those stone walls below grade, this should make a marked improvement on our water damage issues in the fellowship hall. I also want to let you know that I cannot be more pleased with the work Otto is doing, and the quality of workers who are on site. Every person I have encountered, from project manager and site supervisor, to laborers of every specialty, they all have been professional and clearly are taking great pride in their work on our sanctuary and buildings. – Pastor Scot

Altar Guild
Are you locking for a way to contribute to St. John's but don't think you have the time? Consider joining the Atar Guild. We are looking for new members, existing members, male or female, to join us in preparing God's Altar for the Holy Eucharist. Your commitment is minimal. We ask that you be willing to work at least one month a year with a co-worker, setting up for the 8:00 a.m. service. Throughout the year, you will rotate various service with other members of the Altar Guild to either set-up and/or clean-up from the assigned service. There are NO monthly meetings, schedules come out well in advance of your assigned service, and we try to accommodate all scheduling requests.
If you are interested, please call the church office, 444-0874. It's a great way to meet people and do your part to contribute to our weekly worship services at St. John's.

Lutheran Men in Mission
Every third Saturday of the month the Lutheran Men in Mission of St. John's congregation have a breakfast and bible study beginning at 7:30 am. The meeting and study end at approximately 9:00 am so the grass can still be cut on Saturday just a little later than usual. All men of St. John's congregation are welcome. Ask a fellow congregation member to come with you and discover how friendly the Lutheran Men in Mission really are at St. John's. Small group discussion sessions have been planned to discuss such topics as: Masculinity, accountability, discipleship, attitude adjustment, men at work, for men only (issues men face) and many other topics from the book "Master Builder Bible for Men."
