As members of St. John’s and the ELCA, “we are called to walk
with Christ, equipped to live like Christ, and sent by Christ to
love and serve others in the world.” That is at the heart of
discipleship as expressed in Mathew 28: “All authority in heaven
and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make
disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them
to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you
always, to the very end of the age.”

We believe that nurturing and teaching young disciples and their
families is one of our most important responsibilities.
We believe that God wants us to be a congregation which, by
passion and example and commitment, raises up all our children,
adolescents, and young adults, to become healthy, giving, and
faith-filled servant-leaders in the world.
We believe to accomplish this mission we must offer a vibrant and
enthusiastic Sunday School program which encourages our children
to explore their faith through Bible study and discussion, art,
dance, and music.
The Youth Ministry at St. John’s offers classes, service
activities, and social events for young people in grades 7-12.
Centered around Sunday evenings with dinner, and classes,
and a short worship service, the youth group also participates in
retreats and camps, leads ministries like Cafe Rwanda and the
Refuge, and are active participants in all parts of the life of
St. John’s.
On Sunday, June 5, we offered blessings to our 2011 graduates as
they make this major transition in their lives. You are
invited to congratulate them and to remember them in
prayer as they move into the world: Mitchell
Blomquist, Patrick Confer, Noah Dwyer-Voss, Jayla
Lee, Samantha Lee, Jacee Neumann, and Jack Wyatt
III.
As bands and orchestras across the country practice the endless
strains of “Pomp and Circumstances,” young people wait for
envelopes — skinny and fat — to arrive. It is
graduation season!
For more than three decades, St. John’s Lutheran Church has
helped young people headed off to college — as well as those
already enrolled. We believe that the education of young
people is tremendously important, and we strive to acknowledge
the work of the young adults in our community.
Named for William (1928-2009) and Donna (1932-2010) Morgan,
long-time members of St. John’s Lutheran Church. During his
career as an educator, Bill served as principal of McClatchy High
School and devoted himself to the education of Sacramento’s young
people. He and Donna supported the Scholarship Fund from
its infancy, and Bill served as the Scholarship Committee’s chair
for many years.
The William and Donna Morgan Award is presented in their memory
to graduating high school seniors as chosen by the Scholarship
Committee.
New to St. John’s? New to Lutheranism? New to Christianity?
Join us as we explore the fundamentals of our faith and deepen
our connection with the church and with God. This new class takes
the place of our new member class, and brings people into the
community of St. John’s in an exciting new way.
There is currently a class in session. Contact Pastor Frank
Espegren for information on upcoming classes.
Our congregation’s Stephen Ministry equips lay people to provide
confidential, one-to-one Christian care to individuals in our
congregation and community who are experiencing difficulties in
their lives.
On Sunday mornings and evenings, St. John’s offers adult Bible
studies, small group discussions and other opportunities for
Christian education. We focus on nourishing the mind, the body,
and the spirit through prayer, contemplation, and engagement with
the Bible.
The health ministry at St. John’s encompasses a number of
ministries, integrating the care of body, mind and spirit. It is
a wellness model, the focus of which is health promotion and
disease prevention.
The ministry is not a substitute for pastoral or medical care, or
for community health. It is a collaborative partnership with
these disciplines to offer resources, educational opportunities
and a communication network to our congregation and the community
we serve. The Health Ministry Team provides guidance and
direction to these ministries.

At St. John’s Spanish Academy our goal is to help students speak
Spanish with fluency. We will use a proven method with videos and
weekly phone call, grammar and writing. We will conduct the
classes only in Spanish in order to simulate a native language
environment.
Our emphasis is on Conversational Spanish, which consists of
three levels: for beginners, intermediate, and for the advanced.
