A Short History of St. John's Lutheran Church

St John's Lutheran Church was organized in 1867 by German immigrants, the first church was located at the corner of 9th and K Streets and was named the German Evangelical Lutheran Church.

During World War I, the congregation changed its name to St. Johns Lutheran Church. In 1949 the church was completely remodeled, and in 1957 new education, fellowship, and administration wings were added. December 1, 1967, St. Johns celebrated its Centennial Anniversary with extensive remodeling of the worship center and installation of a 4-manual, 70-rank organ. On September 1, 1972, Goethe Hall was remodeled and dedicated in memory of St. John's first pastor, The Rev. Matthias Goethe.
In 1977 the congregation purchased additional parking facilities at 18th and K Streets, which have subsequently been transformed into a parking garage. St. John's is the largest congregation in the Sierra Pacific Synod of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America), with a baptized membership of 2,242, and one of the largest parishes in downtown Sacramento. St John's is actively involved in benevolence work in the world and in the local community with its support of the Downtown Food Basket and St. John's Shelter for Women and Children. sjNEview.jpeg (38517 bytes)

Its worship life is enhanced by its strong music program, by a variety of original art, both inside and outside the church, as well as by its collection of stained glass windows. St. John's sponsors a monthly recital series and a St. John's Religious Art Festival. St. John's continues to serve the people of the Sacramento community and the world through its education, social ministry and outreach programs.
