We would like to share some thoughts with you about planning for future health care needs, especially Advance Healthcare Directives. In Proverbs we are reminded that, “a simple man believes anything, but a prudent man gives thought to his steps.”

What is an Advance Healthcare Directive?
An AHCD is the best way to make sure that your wishes are known and considered if for any reason you are unable to speak for yourself. Completing an AHCD form allows you to appoint another person to be your health care “agent” and it also allows you to write down your health care wishes.

Why is an Advance Healthcare Directive Useful?
An AHCD can be useful in several different ways. First, today with the vast array of health care technology available, decisions about their use is complex and unavoidable. Second, the AHCD gives the patient a way to influence such decisions, rather than the decision being made by doctors and family members. Third, it spares family members from having to make healthcare decisions in a crisis situation.

We recommend the following:

  • Discuss your thoughts with your loved ones, as well as with your doctor.
  • Complete an AHCD form that meets your needs.
  • Give a copy to your doctor, agent, and loved ones.

Remember, planning in advance can bring you peace of mind.
