What do you do here at St. John’s?

When did you begin working here?

June 1996

What was your childhood ambition?

My childhood ambition was to be a nurse. After high school, I planned to join the Navy and receive my nurse’s training. I did not pass the physical, due to childhood asthma, so my plan needed to be revised. I went to plan B and completed my training in January 1979.

What was your first job?

My first job at age 16 was at The Clock Shop, owned by St. John’s members Guenther & Ilse Laudi. I worked for them for 4 years.

What is one thing you can’t live without?

The one thing I can’t live without is relationships with people. I am a loyal friend and I adore my family. I am a very caring and giving person and I am energized by community.

What is your favorite Bible story and why?

My favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:13, “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” This verse has always helped me remember that it is not my strength, but God’s strength, His gift to me. This knowledge has helped me through many areas of my life and I am grateful to be a beloved child of God.

Healing Prayer

At St. John’s, we know healing prayer is a simple gift, a profoundly moving way in which God shows love for us. It is nothing more than an ongoing and growing relationship with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Prayer facilitates the healing of body, mind and spirit. It reminds us that God feels our pain even as Jesus experienced the agony of the cross and it assists us to be still, comforted and secure in the knowledge of God’s presence with us. God gives the gift of healing to the church and calls all of us to pray for the healing of others.

Men’s Health Issues: Prostate Health

This issue we would like to focus on men’s health issues, specifically prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of death in men, behind only lung cancer. One in 6 men will get prostate cancer during their lifetime and one in 36 will die of the disease.

September is fruits and veggies month, so we would like to discuss the importance of eating more. Almost everyone needs to eat more fruits and vegetables. Research shows that they are critical to promoting good health and keeping your body strong and active. Those who eat generous amounts of fruit and vegetables are likely to have reduced risk of chronic diseases, including stroke, other cardiovascular diseases, Type 2 diabetes, bone loss, and certain cancers.

This belief should not be based on what you do or on who/what you know. When we have self-esteem, we have a healthy respect and love for ourselves.

Celiac disease is one of the newest buzzwords in nutrition and health. Until a few years ago, most of us had never heard of it. This month we would like to focus our attention on celiac disease and gluten-free eating. Celiac disease is a genetically linked autoimmune disorder that can affect both adults and children. It is a disease of the intestines which is triggered by the presence of gluten-containing grains such as wheat, barley, oats, and rye, in individuals with intolerance to these proteins.

March is recognized as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and we would like to take this time to discuss this issue with you.

Colorectal cancer refers to any cancer in the lower digestive tract. It’s the second leading cause of cancer-related death for both men and women. People over the age of 50 are at the highest risk of developing this form of cancer. When it is discovered before it spreads to the lymph nodes, the survival rate is quite good.

A family history is an organized recording of important events in the life of a family and any related feelings or circumstances. The creating of family histories is a very healthful activity for persons of all ages and can strengthen family relationships.
