The Youth Ministry at St. John's offers classes, service activities, and social events for young people in grades 7-12. Centered around Sunday evenings with dinner, and classes, and a short worship service, the youth group also participates in retreats and camps, leads ministries like Cafe Rwanda and the Refuge, and are active participants in all parts of the life of St. John's.

The purpose of St. John’s confirmation program is to enable young
people to grow in their Christian faith as they journey toward a
time when they can say “yes” to God who adopted them in the
waters of baptism; say “yes” to Jesus who died on the cross for
their salvation; say “yes” to the Holy Spirit who guides them in
their life and say “yes” to the life and mission of the church.
Keeping the Promise is a two-year program: 1)
one year focuses on the Catechism—the 10 Commandments, the Creeds
and the Lord’s prayer, and 2) the second year focuses on the
Scriptures.
After Confirmation, Senior High Youth are ready to deepen their
faith, challenge their minds, and expand their hearts through
active ministry and outreach and also through leadership. This
year, Senior High Youth can participate in ministry in many ways,
such as:
For a half century, young people have served in worship through
the Order of St. John. They have been acolytes, crucifers,
torchbearers, and banner bearers, providing life and energy and
promise to our worship experience.
Adult mentors and high school leaders, as well as an in-depth
training program, provide the support, structure and instructions
that allow our youth to serve confidently and graciously. If you
are Junior High or High School age, this is one place for you to
actively participate as a leader in worship.
As bands and orchestras across the country practice the endless
strains of “Pomp and Circumstances,” young people wait for
envelopes — skinny and fat — to arrive. It is
graduation season!
For more than three decades, St. John’s Lutheran Church has
helped young people headed off to college — as well as those
already enrolled. We believe that the education of young
people is tremendously important, and we strive to acknowledge
the work of the young adults in our community.
The scholarship program exists to assist qualified students who
are members of the churches in the Sacramento Conference of the
Sierra-Pacific Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America. Two scholarships, each in the amount of $1000, will be
awarded annually.
Named for William (1928-2009) and Donna (1932-2010) Morgan,
long-time members of St. John’s Lutheran Church. During his
career as an educator, Bill served as principal of McClatchy High
School and devoted himself to the education of Sacramento’s young
people. He and Donna supported the Scholarship Fund from
its infancy, and Bill served as the Scholarship Committee’s chair
for many years.
The William and Donna Morgan Award is presented in their memory
to graduating high school seniors as chosen by the Scholarship
Committee.
After prayerful discernment and conversation with our Sierra
Pacific Synod Bishop Mark Holmerud and his staff, the
Congregational Council has endorsed my recommendation to adjust
Pastor Cindy Carroll’s current call at St.John’s so that she may
become our Intentional Interim Associate Pastor. Pastor
Cindy will serve in this capacity, taking over my prior portfolio
of duties as Associate Pastor and Director of Outreach &
Service.Effective November 15, she will be on staff full-time.The
soon-to-form Call Committee will call our next Associate Pastor

The Refuge is an “All Ages Music Venue” that is run by youth and
adult volunteers from St. John’s. The Refuge strives to be a safe
place for youth to listen to and play live music.
For more information about this ministry, concert dates, or if
you are interested in playing at the Refuge, visit us on MySpace, Facebook and Twitter.
The Refuge, our all-ages music venue at St. John’s, was host to
an amazing project last summer.
Music promoter Jerry Perry and filmmaker Jim Bailey partnered
with The Refuge team, including St. John’s sound men Philip
Howard and Anthony Swanson, to produce programs showcasing the
talent of these young people on Access Sacramento.
They taped performances in Goethe Hall in order to produce 12
shows, which are now edited and beginning to air.
You can find them on Comcast Channel 17, Surewest Channel 17, and
U-verse Channel 99.
From its start in 2009, The Refuge has been a place of community
and connection for young people in the Sacramento region.
Our all-ages venue for teenage bands and music fans offers
fledgling musicians the chance to play a professional show and to
gain confidence as artists.
As it begins its fourth year of operation, The Refuge has a rare
chance to showcase the talent of these young people on community
television.
A team of St. John’s young people traveled to New Orleans for the
ELCA Youth Gathering as leaders in the programming. Working
in teams of two — Erin and Brett, Chris and Christina — they
inspired the 30,000 teens before they set out on their service
projects in the city.
Take a peek at some of the work they did — Living God’s Love in
