The Youth Ministry at St. John’s offers classes, service
activities, and social events for young people in grades 7-12.
Centered around Sunday evenings with dinner, and classes,
and a short worship service, the youth group also participates in
retreats and camps, leads ministries like Cafe Rwanda and the
Refuge, and are active participants in all parts of the life of
St. John’s.
At St. John’s, we make a promise at baptism to help our youth
grow into and with their faith. But as others have learned before
us, most confirmation classes boil down to a classroom
experience: a teacher and a bunch of young people who aren’t
terribly interested in sitting up straight and listening to a
lecture.
High School Ministry is a transitional ministry, reflecting the
fact that teens are learning to negotiate the adult world and St.
John’s strives to be a resource of knowledge, faith, and strength
in their lives. We are here to help them connect with God.
On Sunday mornings at 10:15 am we meet for our on-going service
project: running Cafe Rwanda. The proceeds of our mission help to
fund the construction of a hospital in Rwanda. Join us for this
fantastic service work!
For a half century, young people have served in worship through
the Order of St. John. They have been acolytes, crucifers,
torchbearers, and banner bearers, providing life and energy and
promise to our worship experience.
Adult mentors and high school leaders, as well as an in-depth
training program, provide the support, structure and instructions
that allow our youth to serve confidently and graciously. If you
are Junior High or High School age, this is one place for you to
actively participate as a leader in worship.
On October 9 the St. John’s community celebrated as eleven young
people said “yes!” to the promises made at their baptisms.
It’s all a part of our pledge to Keep the Promise.
Congratulations to our Confirmands!
On Sunday, June 5, we offered blessings to our 2011 graduates as
they make this major transition in their lives. You are
invited to congratulate them and to remember them in
prayer as they move into the world: Mitchell
Blomquist, Patrick Confer, Noah Dwyer-Voss, Jayla
Lee, Samantha Lee, Jacee Neumann, and Jack Wyatt
III.

Named for William (1928-2009) and Donna (1932-2010) Morgan,
long-time members of St. John’s Lutheran Church. During his
career as an educator, Bill served as principal of McClatchy High
School and devoted himself to the education of Sacramento’s young
people. He and Donna supported the Scholarship Fund from
its infancy, and Bill served as the Scholarship Committee’s chair
for many years.
The William and Donna Morgan Award is presented in their memory
to graduating high school seniors as chosen by the Scholarship
Committee.
As bands and orchestras across the country practice the endless
strains of “Pomp and Circumstances,” young people wait for
envelopes — skinny and fat — to arrive. It is
graduation season!
For more than three decades, St. John’s Lutheran Church has
helped young people headed off to college — as well as those
already enrolled. We believe that the education of young
people is tremendously important, and we strive to acknowledge
the work of the young adults in our community.
The scholarship program exists to assist qualified students who
are members of the churches in the Sacramento Conference of the
Sierra-Pacific Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America. Two scholarships, each in the amount of $1000, will be
awarded annually.
