About the Event
Young persons in grades 7 through 12 are invited to receive special training as acolytes in the Order of St. John. Prospective new members, both boys and girls (as well as interested new adult mentors), are welcomed.
This training covers all aspects of acolyte service at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Digital acolyte guidebooks will be made available to participants for reference.
Emphasis is given to serving at traditional worship services. Senior Acolytes have been appointed to lead the four standing teams. Each team usually serves one Sunday of every month plus occasional church festivals and infrequent 5th Sundays.
All prospective members of the Order are expected to attend the November 4th lunch and formal training and the team training that follows, as described below:
Training topics include: Acolyte duties, church year and festivals, church architectural areas (vestry, narthex, nave, chancel and sanctuary), and church symbols; Traditional candle lighting (orders of lighting, timing, precedence, candles for special festivals); Acolyte vestments, proper dress and personal conduct; Care and use of equipment (brass candlelighters, processional cross & torches, festival banners, and offering plates); Carrying and holding the lectionary and Gospel books; Format of the Lutheran Worship Service; Processions for worship services; Assisting pastors with sacraments (Baptism and Communion); offerings, and Gospel processions; Tower bell ringing; and fire extinguisher use and safety.
