Gift for the Christ Child
Each year during Advent, St. John’s makes a special offering to an organization doing good work that we can support as a reminder of what keeping Jesus at the center of Christmas is about. We call this the Gift for the Christ Child.
This year our Gift for the Christ Child will go to Family Promise of Sacramento—an organization St. John’s has supported for a long time. If you have ever been to an evening committee meeting on campus and suddenly heard children laughing and playing in the halls, it was probably one of our Family Promise hosting weeks!
Family Promise works with families who are unhoused to help them get back to living independently. They do this by partnering with local congregations to provide shelter and meals, by doing case management with the families weekly, and then by supporting them after they graduate.
Normally St. John’s would host families three or four times a year. But as we all know, 2020 has not been a typical year. Due to COVID-19 it has not been safe for families to stay in a different place each week and interact with as many people as they would before. Therefore, the program has shouldered the cost of housing families in hotels (about $850/week/family) and providing grocery money for them—all expenses normally covered by partner congregations. This year St. John’s hosted families for one week in January, but because of COVID-19 it was not safe to do so for the other three weeks. To keep up our commitment and because they do such important work with unhoused families—we are excited to make Family Promise of Sacramento the recipient of this year’s Gift for the Christ Child! If you have the means to do so, we would love for you to support this organization this Advent! You can do so in all the ways you normally give to the church—by sending a check or by giving online. If you give online, be sure to select “Gift for the Christ Child” as the fund.
Thank you, as always, for your generosity!
